What Duchamp Abandoned for the Waterfall

One hundred color photographs / video projection
2006–09
Courtesy the Artists, Private collection, collection CHUV, Lausanne, and collection Fotomuseum Winterthur

When you don’t look through the peep holes in the door of Marcel Duchamp’s Étant donnés: 1° la chute d’eau, 2° le gaz d’éclairage… (1946–66) at Philadelphia Museum of Art, you see nothing but a half dark empty space. When you don’t look at Le Forestay (the waterfall which Marcel Duchamp photographed for Étant donnés at Bellevue/Chexbres, Switzerland, between August 5 and 9, 1946) you see one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. These photographs show, what Duchamp abandoned for the waterfall – the view on Lake Geneva with the spectacular entrance of the valais valley between the Swiss and the French alps.

Exhibition view as a video projection at Fotomuseum Winterthur, 2012
